Job Description:

The Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering is an academic department within the Faculty of Science. The core functions of the department are teaching & learning and research. The department is situated on the APK Campus in Auckland Park.

The Department is proud to be one of the first accredited department with the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, on the African continent (since 2003) and currently only one of two so accredited. The department consists of three sub-departments namely Computer Science, Informatics (Software Engineering), and Cyber Security. Research in the academy focusses on artificial intelligence and cyber security.

Responsibilities:

  • Be actively involved in core activities of the department such as teaching, research, academic administration, short-course development, marketing, and community projects and science engagement.

Teaching & Learning
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and productive research, and play a role in teaching innovation including the use of e-learning tools.
  • Assume responsibility to teach modules (theory and/or practical) enlisted for the academy’s undergraduate programme.
  • Assist in the presentation of the Digital Forensics Short Learning Programme and be able to assist in the Digital Forensics honours modules
  • The incumbent will also be expected to teach modules in postgraduate programmes.
  • Must mentor and assess the marking of third year practical year projects on a level acceptable to the British Computer Society.
  • Present Public Lectures on selected technical topics

Research
  • Obtain research funding from external funding bodies.
  • Annually publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited scientific and/or academic journals, and deliver papers at national and international conferences, commensurate with the level of appointment.

Administration
  • Must assist in the organization of the Annual IT Projects Day
  • Perform administrative and ad hoc duties as required by the Department.
  • Assist with the management of student assistant appointments
  • Must keep records / evidence of teaching and learning activities to a level suitable for the various accreditation bodies the academy interacts with.
  • Serve on committees at departmental, faculty, and or institutional level.

Community Engagement
  • Participate in Community Engagement Initiatives as determined by the department.

Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology with a preference for the following fields:
  • o Cyber Security, agent technology, biologically inspired Artificial Intelligence, computational intelligence.
  • Strong capabilities in technical programming
  • The successful applicant must be registered for or willing to register for a Ph.D. in the above fields with a proven record of research publications submitted and published on an international level in the field of registration.
  • The successful applicant must have an excellent academic record.
  • Must have successfully contributed to projects days.
  • Must have successfully mentored and assessed the marking of third year practical year projects on a level acceptable to the British Computer Society.
  • Must pass a practical programming assessment as determined by the Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
  • The proven ability to teach both Computer Science and Informatics courses and in particular VB.Net, advanced data structures.
  • The proven ability to teach both Computer Science and Informatics courses on an Honours level.
  • Sufficient lecturing experience with professionally evaluated outcomes.
  • Exposure to TurnitIn for checking the integrity of research assignments.
  • Experience of managing the auditing of all answer scripts for all examinations of both Computer Science and Informatics on both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills.
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.

Working Conditions and Expectations:
  • Adherence to the working conditions for academic staff as defined by the University of Johannesburg
  • Primarily based on APK Campus but may be required to perform academic duties on other campuses or off-campus
