Job Description:
 
The University of Johannesburg is looking for a dynamic Manager to join our clients and growing team that is situated at the UJ island located at the  Vaal Dam. (This is a live-in position). The manager oversees all day-to-day UJ island operations and maintains the facilities. The Manager is responsible for the quality and satisfaction of every guest’s stay and staff member’s work life while focusing on the objectives through an annual business plan for the UJ island. He/She is responsible for managing the entire inventory of key assets (physical and staff) including, island boats island vehicles, food, and beverage. The manager must ensure the objectives are clearly defined as per the expectations of service execution and delivery.
 
Responsibilities:
 
Leadership
  • Create and maintain positive working relationships by establishing a clear set of reasonable and mutually agreed-upon expectations that align with the UJ island mission and the University’s strategic plan to help employees create clear paths to success.
  • Effectively measure and evaluate the performance of direct reports through both formal performance appraisals and informal methods such as regular feedback, coaching, and one-on-one conversations.
  • Create and maintain an open-door policy to be informed of what the issues are in the areas and to resolve the identified issues proactively.
  • Increase leadership communication and ensure all staff are kept informed and always provide regular feedback.
Personnel Management
  • Recruitment (onboarding activities), staff performance, staff training/ development, discipline.
  • Problem-solving: Ensure the below employee issues are resolved should they arise:
    • Grievances
    • Disciplinary
    • Disputes       
    • Absenteeism
    • Behaviours
    • Poor Performance
  • Implement procedures and manual controls for the UJ island.
  • Change management: Guide and support the staff to successfully adopt change to drive the university’s strategies and objectives.
  • Staff attendance on various shifts and allocations.
  • Create roster and work schedules for the UJ island.
Project planning and coordination
  • Manage and coordinate projects aligned to the UJ island by ensuring the implementation of strategies, policies, and scheduling tasks aligned to the operational plan.
  • Networking with external contractors effectively and ensuring that tasks are executed within an acceptable timeframe.
  • Keep abreast through various mediums and advice on the latest technology and legislation for optimum use of resources.
  • Ensure that the project team is accredited to perform their tasks as required in legislation and for quality assurance purposes.
Reporting
  • Compile and maintain the asset register.
  • Regular reporting on all project coordination-related matters
  • Provide solutions and improvement plans.
  • Benchmark and ensure best practices are applied in projects.
Budgets
  • Compile and control project budget through collaboration with the senior management within Facilities management.
  • Ensure budget savings are a priority.
Good Governance
  • Ensure all coordination of projects are following the OHS act, to be readily available, accessible, functional, and safe for all stakeholders.
  • Ensuring compliance with the OHS-Act, BCEA, LRA, and EE-Act.
  • Comply with UJ policies and Conditions.

Minimum requirements

  • An NQF-level 7 equivalent qualification within the field of Business Management/Tourism/hospitality management
  • 3 years experience within the hospitality industry
  • 2 years managerial experience
  • Must have a valid boat driver's license
  • Must have a valid code 8 driver’s license
  • This is a live-in position and the incumbent must travel to the university when required.
