Job description
- Be situated at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, but not excluded from supporting all campuses
- Fulfil technical and administrative roles in the Department
- Participate in the design of Wi-Fi, network, and telephone solutions.
- Installing, configuring, and maintaining Wi-Fi, network, and telephone equipment.
- Network, Wi-Fi and Telephone management and support.
- Monitoring of network infrastructure (network, Wi-Fi, and telephony) for performance.
- Service delivery by providing 3rd Level support when required (handling escalations from 2nd line network, Wi-Fi, and Telephone support).
- Monitoring of VoIP/telephony infrastructure (PBX, PCSs, Session border controller, call centre, voice-loggers, SMS system and TMS) for performance.
- Testing and evaluating existing networks, maintaining existing networks and troubleshooting LAN and WAN networks.
- Participate in technological Innovation and Enhancement by providing and implementing innovative ideas in network management or Wi-Fi infrastructure, voice, and video communication.
- Leverage automation and new technologies.
- Participate in the Design, installation and administration of Network equipment, management, and monitoring tools (within the Network and Telephony domain).
- Up-to-date device and link descriptions on all network switches.
- Assist with Updating network diagrams and documentation.
- Assist with managing up-to-date, accurate device rack layout and allocations.
- Assist with ensuring neat and tidy installations.
- Capacity Planning and bandwidth utilization.
- Collaboration and benchmarking with other global institutions of higher learning.
- Project administration.
- Assisting with 3rd Line support when required (handling escalations from 2nd line network, Wi-Fi, and Telephone support).
- Ensure secured and locked network core cabinets.
- Strict adherence to university and ICS standards, processes, and procedures i.e., Use of predefined IP addressing and use and VLANs.
- Participating in Testing and evaluating existing networks, maintaining existing networks and troubleshooting LAN\WLAN and WAN networks.
- Assisting with the replacement of network hardware including network switches and Wi-Fi access points.
- Labelling of devices.
- Collaboration with other units within the ICS department.
- Making and Testing of network cables.
- Assisting with Wi-Fi troubleshooting i.e., identifying bad network coverage areas.
Minimum requirements
- Relevant Qualification (Diplomas and Certification) (NQF 6), with 3 to 5 years of job-related experience.
- Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching or Huawei HCIA Routing and Switching or ACFE (Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Certified Field Expert) OmniPCX Enterprise R11 or equivalent Certification.
- 3 years of Network, Wi-Fi, and Telephone support experience.
- 3 to 5 years of Wi-Fi troubleshooting experience.
- 3 years of Switch configuration experience.
- ITIL Foundation.
- Project Management knowledge.
- Extensive knowledge of Windows Desktop support.
- Computer IP Network and Telephony Principles (WAN and LAN).
- Understanding of network and Wi-Fi protocols and technologies.
- Understanding of analogue and IP telephone systems.
- ACSE (Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Certified System Expert) OmniPCX Enterprise.
- Network management monitoring tools (ie, solarwinds, manage engine).
- Huawei HCNA WLAN.
- Cisco CCNP or Huawei HCIP Routing and Switching.
- Network performance monitoring with the network management system.
- Understanding of network security (LAN and WLAN).

- Including Understanding of Routing and Switching.
- Understanding of network protocols.
- Understanding of Network OSI Layers.
- Full understanding of mac address, ARP and routing tables.
- Knowledge of network analysis tools, e.g. Wireshark. .
