Job Description

The department of Anthropology and Development Studies at UJ hosts two subjects, namely Anthropology and Development Studies. We offer various degrees and courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in these subjects, Our undergraduate classes are large, ranging from 300 to 700 in first year, 200 to 500 in second year, and 100 to 300 in third year. We offer courses in a blended learning approach, in class and online for the same cohort of students. Our young dynamic colleagues have a range of research expertise in anthropology and development studies, including the medical humanities, human rights and social justice, youth, gender and generation, sexualities, the environment, climate changes, water and food security, urbanisation, and the political economy of development.

Responsibilities:  
 
  • You teach Development Studies and Anthropology at the undergraduate and Honours levels
  • You supervise post graduate students’ honours, MA and PhD levels in both anthropology and development studies
  • You engage in research, and produce peer reviewed accredited publications
  • You participate in departmental administrative duties and in strategic planning for the department
  • You engage in activities and events in the faculty and university as well as academic associations
  • You involve yourself in community engagement 

Minimum requirements

Required qualifications:
 
  • Doctorate in Anthropology or a related field (e.g. development studies, history, sociology)
  • 5 years teaching experience at a university level
  • Experience of supervising PhD, MA, and Hons students
  • Peer reviewed published research outputs in international, national journals and books
  • Evidence of a full-length book manuscript in progress
 
Required work related experience:
 
  • Teaching experience of large undergraduate classes using a scaffolded, blended learning and teaching approach
  • Development of quality and innovative learning materials
  • Meaningfully involved in community activities
  • Able to engage with one or more of themes of focus of UJ anthropology and development studies which are displayed on our website.
