Job description

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Technology (situated in Doornfontein Campus) is one of the biggest departments in terms of staff and student complement comprised of a dedicated team of Researchers focused on pioneering advancements within the field. It offers accredited engineering programmes in Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEngTech), BEngTech Honours, Masters and PhD in Engineering. The department is looking for someone who is passionate about teaching and learning and enhancing students' educational experiences with a research profile that can contribute to the societal impact and sustainability, global footprint and partnerships, and technology of the future. The incumbent will be required to teach departmental modules, conduct research, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and perform other departmental duties.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrating commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the discipline of Mechanical
- Engineering, as well as supervising Masters and Doctoral students and mentoring Postdoctoral Research Fellows (PDRFs).
- Teaching innovation, online teaching and learning and computer literacy such as the ability to use Mechanical Engineering software packages (e.g. Autocad, Flownex, Matlab, StarCCM).
- Leading the curriculum development and reviewing programmes to stay up to date with societal, technological, and industry needs.
- Supervising final year undergraduate and honours student projects.
- Conducting research: publish research work in journals, books, book chapters and conference proceedings consistent with the level of appointment.
- Liaising with industry for collaborations and projects and obtaining funding for research and other activities from external bodies.
- Compiling evidence of teaching and learning to ensure compliance with ECSA accreditation.
- Attending department and faculty meetings including various committees’ engagements.
- Liaising and assisting when required with student issues upon delegation of authority of the HoD.
- Advance the discipline of Mechanical Engineering through community and industrial development including participating in professional societies (e.g. ECSA) and voluntary associations (e.g. SAIMechE).
Minimum requirements
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:
- A Doctoral qualification in Engineering (NQF Level 10).
- BTech, BEng Tech or BSc (Eng) or B Eng in Mechanical Engineering.
- Must have previous teaching experience, 5 to 10 years.
- Strong evidence of research outputs in DHET accredited journals at an Associate Professor level.
- Experience in supervising and promoting postgraduate students (Master’s and / or PhD).
- NRF rated or eligible to apply for NRF rating within one year.
- A track record of sourcing external research funding.
- Registered at least as a Candidate Engineer / Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and eligible to register as a Professional.
- Engineer / Technologist within one year
SENIOR LECTURER:
- A Doctoral qualification in Engineering (NQF Level 10).
- BTech, BEng Tech or BSc (Eng) or B Eng in Mechanical Engineering.
- Must have previous teaching experience, 3 to 5 years.
- Experience in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students (Master’s and / or PhD).
- Evidence of research outputs in DHET accredited journals at Senior Lecturer level.
- Registered at least as a Candidate Engineer / Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and eligible to register as a Professional.
- Engineer / Technologist within one year.

Recommendations:
- Registration as a Professional Engineer / Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
- Evidence of national and international collaborations (academia and / or industry), and sourcing of external funding.
- Evidence of engagement with scholarship of teaching and learning (SToL), i.e., teaching portfolio.
