Job description

The Analytical Facility in the Faculty of Science provides a variety of services to the students and staff of the Faculty, other disciplines in the University, other tertiary institutions and the private sector, both nationally and internationally. Dedicated specialists in various fields provide expertise and assistance in experimental design, suitable preparation- and analytical techniques and training in order to produce quality and accurate data in support of research efforts.
 
A suitable candidate should be able to offer an effective analytical service to colleagues and clients, including assistance with selection of suitable methods, training in sample preparation, training in operation of equipment and interpretation of data. Duties include routine maintenance and repair of equipment and actively contributing to the research efforts of the University and the income of the Facility via service to other tertiary institutions and private companies.
 
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Daily operation of equipment and provision of training and advice as required
  • Administration regarding booking of instrument time, purchasing of consumables, maintenance
  • Controlling inventories
  • Completion and invoicing of work for other tertiary institutions and private companies
  • Continuous skills development
  • Participate in research
  • Participate in annual international benchmarking of analytical results

Minimum requirements

  • PhD degree in experimental science
  • Minimum of 3 years’ hands on experience operating an Electron microprobe and XRF
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Ability to work independently under pressure in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Have superior people skills in order to provide effective service to a variety of users with various levels of knowledge, experience and expertise.
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Extensive experience in operating and maintaining analytical equipment
  • Specific EMP and XRF training
  • Record of published research
