Job description

The Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology is established in the Faculty of Science at the Doornfontein Campus of the University of Johannesburg with effect from January 2014. The department offers vocationally focussed undergraduate qualifications as well as postgraduate qualifications up to the doctoral level within the disciplines of Biotechnology and Food Technology. It is focused on training scientists, and technologists in Biotechnology and Food Technology for a wide range of industries as well as research in the related fields. This post is focussed on the teaching and learning, and research related to the Biotechnology discipline.
 
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate:
 
  • Must be capable of lecturing Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Bioinformatics.
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and productive research and play a leading role in teaching innovation.
  • Must be able to develop course material for Biotechnology modules required in the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology.
  • Must be actively involved in core activities of the department such as academic administration, research, short-course development, marketing, and community development projects.
  • Be familiar with South African Biotechnology and Food Industry.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD in Microbiology or Biotechnology or Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or Bioinformatics.
  • Three (3) to six (6) or more years' working experience in the Higher Education environment.
  • Excellent teaching skills and knowledge in the relevant field.
  • A proven research track record in reputable journals and conference proceedings.
  • Supervision experience at Master’s level (completed students).
  • Familiarity with SA Biotechnology or Food Industries.
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Computer Literacy.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Good organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, and a proven record of academic administration.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Analytical thinking.
  • Experience in the integration of ICT in teaching and learning as well as electronic assessment techniques e.g. Moodle
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Track record of postgraduate (MSc and PhD) supervision, and accredited research output in the relevant discipline including conference proceedings.
  • Track record of national and international collaborations or scholarship will be an added advantage.
  • Proven engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning including innovative teaching practices, include your teaching portfolio and previous peer and teaching evaluations.
  • Knowledge of the online learning environment.
  • Previous exposure to management of portfolios within a higher education environment.
  • Evidence of visibility within the academic community.
