Job description

Student Ethics and Discipline is responsible for promoting ethics and discipline at the University. This role oversees and manages the implementation and promotion of UJ student ethics and discipline policies.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Provide leadership and vision to ensure compliance in matters relating to student discipline, guidance service and student safety
  • Investigate and adjudicate student misconducts and other related disciplinary activities
  • Provide oversight and supervision for student support and case management
  • Monitor and oversee the preparation and administration of student conduct hearings
  • Research and complete required reports and documents that are central to the outcomes of the   case management
  •  Incorporate policies and procedures in accordance with the University laws and regulations
  • Contribute to policy development and strategic planning for the department
  • Ensure that all practices in the student affairs are legal and ethical
  • Guide, direct and participate in the students’ disciplinary processes including suspension of students and expulsions
  • Design and develop standard operating procedures relating to student discipline and the preservation of the disciplinary integrity;
  • Maintain individual and student organisational case records
  • Design, implement and evaluate educational programmes focusing on student ethical behaviour, student rights and responsibilities, mediation, community responsibilities, sexual assaults, alcohol and drug abuse, cross- cultural tolerance and respect, and conflict resolution
  • Provide counselling to individual students regarding their rights and responsibilities
  • Play an advisory role on complex legal issues evolving in higher education
  • Oversee the department’s expenditure and prepare budgets in line with the budgetary constraints
  • Ensure the confidentiality of all students’ disciplinary records contained in the department by monitoring the maintenance and security of such records
  • Ensure adherence to the students’ conduct and the disciplinary code
  • Ensure that student hearings and disciplinary sessions are conducted in line with relevant legal procedures and processes.
  • Act as a liaison between the department of Judicial Services and community agencies, University management, staff, South African Police Services, legal representatives etc.
  • Serve as a student conduct liaison in clarifying procedures and options available to faculty, staff, students, student disciplinary committees in response to student behavior
  • Adhoc requests in line with student affairs processes and procedures.

Minimum requirements

  • Law Degree or any relevant qualification (NQF 7)
  • Two (2) to three (3) years job-related experience, or
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of job-related experience
  • Five years’ experience in the management of student affairs, with three years’ exposure to student disciplinary 
    processes
  • Knowledge of UJ’s policies, procedures and regulations
