Job description

As a small but vibrant department located in the Faculty of Humanities, the Department of Religion Studies envisions itself as a diverse academic community that focuses on researching and teaching living religions in Africa while centering social justice. The importance of making sense of the social world through the eyes of people of faith informs much of the work done in the department. The empirical and textual research conducted by staff and postgraduate students alike explores living faiths in their societal context, focusing on Christianity and Islam. The Department offers degrees from the Honours level to the PhD level, with a strong focus on the study of Islam and Christianity, two of the major religions impacting Africa today.

Job Description:

The Department of Religion Studies is looking to hire an academic staff member to boost its research on Islam as well as the teaching and supervision in the Study of Islam. While the ideal candidate matches the University’s requirements for an Associate Professor or Professor, the applications of accomplished younger scholars who fulfil the requirements set of a Senior Lecturer are also welcomed.

Responsibilities:  
 
  • Building the research capacity of the Department through publishing peer-reviewed research outputs, applying for research funding, attending conferences, etc.
  • Supervising Honours, Masters and Doctoral students in the field of the study of Islam
  • Teaching at postgraduate level (Honours and Masters); possibly teaching at undergraduate level in the future
  • Participating in the running and development of Short Learning Programmes
  • Offering strategic intellectual and academic leadership
  • Networking nationally and internationally with academic institutions and individuals
  • Participating in departmental administrative duties   
  • Participating in academic citizenship and community engagement

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD focusing on the Study of Islam or a relevant closely aligned field, such as Sociology of Religion or Anthropology of Religion with a focus on Islam
  • Keen interest in the social relevance of religion 
  • A good track record in publishing peer-reviewed academic research
  • Evidence of successful supervision of Masters (SL, AP) and Doctoral (P) candidates to completion
  • Minimum of three (SL, AP) to five (P) years of teaching experience in a higher education environment

  • Ability and willingness to work with a diverse student body
  • High personal standards when it comes to integrity and ethical conduct
  • Good leadership skills
 
 Recommendations:
 
  • Sensitivity and a positive attitude towards the studied religion(s) and faith communities
  • An NRF rating or willingness to apply for one
  • Good track-record of applying for research funding
