Job description

The Academic Development Centre (ADC) strives to provide theoretically based, and practical interventions and developmental opportunities to both Academic staff and students. All student related services are equally but proportionally represented on all four UJ campuses and the ADC staff strive to provide integrated, relevant, and up-to-date growth opportunities. The work conducted in ADC includes providing Learning Development service on all UJ campuses. This post will be responsible for providing learning development assistance on the UJ Doornfontein campus.

Responsibilities: 

The Learning Development facilitator on DFC will:

  • Coordinate all student learning interventions and marketing of learning development unit on the DFC campus.
  • Offer customized assistance to undergraduate students such as: one-on-one, small group and focus group learning development consultations both in the face-to-face and the online modalities.
  • Work closely with relevant academics to provide customized and integrated student learning support to their students.
  • Actively participate in the student advising system at UJ and contribute toward designated projects that enhance undergraduate student experience within the center and the division.
  • Where necessary, liaise closely with other support services (PsyCaD, CAT, UJ Clinic etc.) to ensure students are effectively assisted.
  • Load, monitor and track the progress of participants in the online learning development module, and generate reports when required.
  • Help students to create personalised study plans where appropriate (this includes drawing up study timetables, study skills advice and exam preparation inputs).
  • Develop and offer customized and integrated group workshops/intervention sessions to students on various topics.
  • Develop material for the online learning development modules and sites.
  • Offer and assist with training of mentors, tutors, and Residence Academic Advisors (RAA).
  • Prepare and present webinars and podcasts on topics related to learning development, skills, and strategies.
  • Assist with the campus-based marketing of ADC.
  • Remain informed and keep updated with current trends in Academic Development and Academic Advising.
  • Participate in research projects that relate to Academic Development initiatives.
  • Any other relevant duties as required by the HOD.

Minimum requirements

  • A Masters degree in Education, or a related field
  • Proven materials development experience
  • Experience working in Higher Education
  • A sound understanding of issues faced by students entering Higher Education in South Africa
  • 3-Years of experience in a Higher Education environment
 
Recommendations:
  • A PhD degree in Education or a related field
  • Knowledge of the field of academic development
  • A proven record of research publications
  • Understanding of 21st century student profile and needs.

  • Good organisational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work with both students and staff
  • The ability to work as a member of a team
  • Possess reading and writing experience at Higher Education
