In the Department of Metallurgy at University of Johannesburg we offer a unique and “true” metallurgical engineering programmes with an emphasis on processing and engineering as well as manufacturing principles. The Department of Metallurgy at the University of Johannesburg offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees programmes.
 
Responsibilities:
 
Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to make an appointment of a Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in the Department of Metallurgy in the field of Extraction Metallurgy/Coal Processing. We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified and ambitious aspirant academic to contribute to and expand the faculty’s current teaching and research interests/specialisations.
 
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the projects of the department, including administrative duties, and teach in undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Department of Metallurgy.
 
In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:
 
  • Teach in undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Department of Metallurgy.
  • Expand and sustain research in Coal Processing and Extraction Metallurgy.
  • Contribute actively to research and publication in his/her specialist field(s).
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research in Extraction Metallurgy.
  • Develop, review and lecture undergraduate and postgraduate subjects in Metallurgy.
  • Execute departmental administrative tasks, e.g. ECSA filing.
  • Execute administrative tasks at the faculty level, if/when required.
  • Community engagement.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD degree in Extraction Metallurgy and related fields with a background in Coal Processing (Senior Lecturer)
  • A Master’s degree in Extraction Metallurgy and related fields with a background in Coal Processing (Lecturer)
  • Strong commitment to teaching and research.
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience at a tertiary institution.
  • Registered Professional by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), or immediate application in case of appointment.
  • Evidence of research outputs and proven track record of postgraduate supervision of Masters level or higher students.
  • Minimum of 3 years' industrial experience in Extraction Metallurgy.

  • Demonstrated ability/experience to work with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to perform research, teaching, and administration simultaneously.

  • Analytical thinking and coordination skills.
