Head Technician (P8) (Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment: Department of Mechanical Engineering Science)

Job description
- Sound ability to communicate with students, and staff – as well as in the teaching and learning environment
- Reporting, machining, laboratory safety management
- Support to all departmental stakeholders with technical services
- Maintenance, and calibration of equipment in laboratories
- Be diligent and dynamic team player, liaising with other technical support teams regarding laboratory activity planning
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or any relevant qualification (NQF 7), with 2 to 5 years’ job-related experience
- Registration with relevant training bodies as assessor or red seal welder is an added advantage
- Extensive knowledge on mechanical equipment operation such as Milling, lathe, Electro Discharge Machining, bandsaw and guillotine, etc
- Experience on welding process will be an added advantage
- A proven track record of technical ability, and trouble shooting in a laboratory environment
- Evidence of operating machining equipment
- Industrial / laboratory experience in machining environment with drawing interpretation would be advantageous
- Supportive of academic culture, excellence, and research support
- Good technical aptitude, having experience in project work and team work.
- Willingness to pursue further studies, and to register with relevant professional councils - Engineering Council of South Africa
- Forklift training experience would be an added advantage
