Job description

The Academic Development Centre (ADC) strives to provide theoretically based, and practical interventions and developmental opportunities to both Academic staff and students. All student related services are equally but proportionally represented on all four UJ campuses and the ADC staff strive to provide integrated, relevant, and up-to-date growth opportunities. The work conducted in ADC includes providing service courses in a variety of Access Programmes. ADC staff teach in a variety of life-skills and focused literacies development modules and this includes the module Language for the Economical Sciences (LES) during the first year of extended degree studies. This position is for the Facilitator of Language for Economical Sciences. 

Responsibilities:  

Teach and coordinate the Language for the Economic Sciences by conducting the following activities:

  • Develop cutting-edge curricular materials, prepare, and offer weekly lectures customised to meet the needs of extended degree students.
  • Manage, monitor, and brief the LES tutors to facilitate student learning and development.
  • Manage and maintain the online learning component of the module and make use of innovative methods and technologies in teaching academic literacy.
  • Monitor student performance and intervene where and when necessary.
  • Effectively administrate the running of this module (academic administration, Centre administration and reporting)
  • Develop and administer robust and appropriate assessments to measure student development.
  • Manage the quality of the teaching and learning of the module in terms of the faculty and student needs.
  • Update and enhance the content of the module by revising various themes and learning units.
  • Evaluate the quality of teaching and learning in the Language for the Economic Sciences module.
  • Liaise and closely collaborate with the College of Business and Economics with regards to their extended qualification.
  • Contribute to the process of including institutional priorities (decolonizing the curriculum; 4IR and Sustainability) as it applies to language teaching.
  • Any other relevant duties as required by the Director.

Minimum requirements

  • A Masters degree in Education, Linguistics or a related field
  • Proven materials development experience
  • Experience with coordinating or teaching a language module at a university
  • A sound understanding of issues faced by students entering Higher Education in South Africa 
  • Proven knowledge in the field of academic literacies
  • 3-Years' experience in a Higher Education environment
 
Recommendations:
  • A PhD degree in Education, Linguistics, e-learning, curriculum development or a related field
  • A proven record of research publications
  • Understanding of 21st century student profile and needs.

  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work with both students and staff
  • The ability to work as a member of a team
  • Possess reading and writing development experience at Higher Education level
