The Academic Development Centre (ADC) strives to provide theoretically based, and practical interventions and 
developmental opportunities to both Academic staff and students. All student related services are equally but proportionally represented on all four UJ campuses and the ADC staff strive to provide integrated, relevant, and up-to-date growth opportunities. The work conducted in ADC includes providing student learning development services on all UJ campuses, onsite and remotely. This post will be responsible for assisting with the roll out and management of the UJ First year Experience, First Year orientation and the UJ 101 module.
 
Responsibilities:
ADS stands at the head of implementing a large-scale academic mentoring system aimed at improving student 
success at UJ. The Coordinator III: FYE/SSE will have the main responsibilities:
 
  • Lead the implementation of the UJ FYE/SSE initiatives in all material respects.
  • Chair and lead the central UJ First year Orientation (FYO) committee and all included planning processes to ensure an effective UJ FYO.
  • Coordinate the use of UJ venues and make required arrangements and bookings to facilitate the smooth roll out of the UJ FYO.
  • Recruit and train the UJ FYO Marshals as well as provide oversight of their work during the UJ FYO.
  • Prepare all centrally managed UJ FYO materials and ensure that they are effectively stored, distributed and used
  • Manage the HR and financial aspects of the FYE/FYO portfolios to ensure that all policies are complied with and that resources are efficiently used.
  • Make all practical preparations for the implementation of the annual UJ FYO and manage the rollout of the event when it takes place.
  • Coordinate the implementation of the UJ 101 module as part of the UJ 101 implementation team.
  • Conduct research into the perceptions about and the impact of the UJ FYE/FYO and the UJ 101 module.

Minimum requirements

  • An appropriate Master's degree in the fields of Education, Psychology or other equivalent fields.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience in working in student success or teaching in a south African Higher Educational institution
  • Experience in developing student success related materials.
  • Teaching and learning principles and practices. A good understanding of curriculum issues in the South African Higher Education
  • Experience in leading a team of people towards achieving a joint goal
  • A working knowledge of effective teaching, assessment, and classroom pedagogy for underprepared students
 
Recommendations:
 
  • A PHD in a relevant field
  • Lecturing experience in an academic development programme in Higher Education.
  • Strong interest in researching in the field of academic development/student success.
  • Experience in organizing or rolling out a First Year Orientation programme at a university
