Job description

Responsibilities:

  • Administration of both postgraduate and undergraduate extractive metallurgy laboratories
  • Develop practical manual and Standard operating procedures.
  • Play the role of Safety Officer and First aider.
  • Prepare and present various practical experiments for undergraduate students.
  • Facilitate procurement of equipment and other laboratory consumables
  • Chair monthly planning meetings with laboratory staff and support staff.
  • Draft procurement budget for equipment and consumables
  • Draft the laboratory maintenance plan for the HOD’s approval.
  • Maintain various laboratory equipment.
  • Use the Blackboard Learning Management System for interactive online tuition.
  • Keep all material and equipment in good working order and report faulty equipment.
  • Control and maintain equipment and stock in the laboratories and storerooms through regular stock takes to ensure sufficient supply of consumables.
  • Write equipment specifications for purchasing and follow-up on order forms for equipment.
  • Always ensure the health and safety of students in the laboratories.
  • Be able to engage in intra / inter-departmental research endeavours.
  • Perform any related administrative functions to support teaching, learning, research, and community engagement in accordance with UJ and Faculty objectives and requirements.

Minimum requirements

  • Masters in Chemistry / Extractive Metallurgy
  • Minimum 3 years industrial laboratory experience

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Advanced knowledge in inorganic chemistry
  • Competency in coal processing, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy
  • Competent in operating ICP-OES, AAS, SEM-EDS, XRF and XRD
  • Good communication skills

Advantages

  • Knowledge of sample preparation, method development and validation for ICP-OES, AAS, SEM-EDS, XRF and XRD

Recommendations:

  • Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or any other SAQA recognised body or council.
