Job description

UJ's Centre for Academic Technologies (CAT) aims to foster future-fit learning, teaching and assessment through innovative, responsible and appropriate uses of technology underpinned by pedagogical good practice. Through enabling technologies, we aim to maintain and grow UJ's continued relevance in delivering globally recognised education.
 
The CAT Instructional Designer (or Learning Experience Advisor) provides an advisory service centred around the use of technology in course design, teaching, learning and assessment. This service guides UJ learning facilitators to use UJ Moodle and related technologies in teaching and learning to their fullest potential by aligning curriculum goals and pedagogical approaches to Moodle features and functionalities. Instructional Designers have a caring, curious and people-centred approach to their support service. They work to understand higher education teaching and learning challenges by building and maintaining trusting and reliable relationships. The practice of learning experience advising draws knowledge and skills from customer service, customer success, Moodle functionality, learning experience design, coaching and mentoring, and higher education learning, assessment and teaching.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Learning experience advisor sevice and practice: Faculty collaboration and advising, training and workshops, learning facilitator success meetings and support, course quality review and enhancement, and leading good practice in learning experience design.
  • Collaborative research: Involved in conceptualisation, planning, data gathering, analysis, writing and dissemination of research for the advancement and future-fit relevance of CAT, our technologies and learning experience advisor practice and service.
  • Peer montoring: Mentor future instructional designers (through an internship programme) and mentor learning facilitators (such as lecturers and tutors).
  • Reporting: on the adoption of Moodle and related technologies, and on learning experience advisor practice and service.

Minimum requirements

  • A Master's degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Pedagogical knowledge with the capability to advise on and implement good practices in pedagogy.
  • At least three years' proven experience doing learning design in the higher education sector.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Moodle LMS.
  • Experience participating in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in using learning analytics and data for decision-making.

  • Learning experience design expertise to develop engaging, inclusive, and accessible learning experiences.
  • Educational technology proficiency (in Moodle and other educational technology tools) with an awareness of and proactive seeking out of emerging educational technologies, approaches and their potential applications.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively to various stakeholders.
  • Skilled in facilitating workshops, training sessions and consultations.
  • Proficiency in evaluating the effectiveness of learning experience design.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address higher educational challenges in teaching and learning with technology.
  • Skilled in fostering a collaborative and inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher educational settings.
  • Proficiency in providing guidance and support to learning facilitators.
  • Ability to mentor and coach learning facilitators in learning experience practices.
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining professional relationships and networks.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current in learning experience design and emerging technologies of use for teaching and learning.
  • Practice ethical and professional standards (such as academic integrity and promoting ethical behaviour). 
Working conditions:
 
  • May be required to travel between campuses.
  • May be required to work outside of normal working hours.

Recommendations:
 
  • Experience in customer service and support.
  • Research on the use of technology in higher education in South Africa.
  • Experience with related learning, teaching and assessment technologies (e.g. Turnitin, h5p, Respondus, Articulate 360, Invigilator App).
  • Participation in relevant professional organisations and conferences.
  • Experience in a mentoring programme.
