Job Description:

To teach, conduct research, and provide academic leadership and management in the Access Construction Management & Quantity Surveying portfolio to fulfil the mission of the Academic Development Centre: Access. Where appropriate, to interact with the community to work towards the mission of the Academic Development Centre: Access and, ultimately, towards the mission of the University of Johannesburg.
 
The Academic Development Centre (ADC) strives to provide theoretically based, and practical interventions and developmental opportunities to both Academic staff and students. All student related services are equally but proportionally represented on all four UJ campuses and the ADC staff strive to provide integrated, relevant, and up-to-date growth opportunities. ADC includes the management of a variety of Access Programmes. ADC: Access offers extended curriculum programmes on behalf of the College of Business and Economics and the Humanities and Engineering and the Built Environment Faculties. A significant focus of ADC: Access is laying a strong knowledge foundation for higher education through the offering of foundational provision modules to extended students. 
 
Key Responsibilities: 
 
Lead the Construction portfolio by:

  • Designing, teaching, lecturing, facilitating, coordinating, and assessing the Bachelor of Science in Construction Extended Program Modules in Year 1 and Year 2 within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.
  • Ensuring the efficient functioning of the portfolio and managing all lecturers, teaching and learning activities and resources concerned with the portfolio.
  • Teaching in the extended Bachelor of Science in Construction
  • Ensuring the development and effective delivery of the modules in the portfolio and foundational provisioning.
  • Identifying and addressing areas of difficulty by designing intervention strategies with other coordinators that are in line with student needs.
  • Participating in and contributing to Academic Development initiatives within the Centre.
  • Assisting with the implementation of new Extended Curriculum Programmes (ECPs).
  • Liaising with the Department of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying concerning the extended foundational provision modules in the ECPs.
  • Assist students in transitioning and assimilating from the extended program into the mainstream Bachelor of Science in Construction programme.
  • Ensure all requirements required by SACPCMP and SACQSP are met during Accreditation Visits.
  • Assisting with funding applications and reporting to the Department of Higher Education and Training.
  • Taking responsibility for certain management and administrative responsibilities related to the ECPs.
  • Develop teaching materials and coordinate materials development and/or improvement with the Department of Construction and relevant stakeholders.
  • Assisting with any other related duties as required by the Head.

Minimum requirements

  • A Master of Science degree or a Masters in a related field.
  • A specialist/Project Manager in Construction Management & Quantity Surveying
  • A teaching qualification OR a minimum of two years’ experience in teaching at a Higher Education Institution in Construction Management & Quantity Surveying.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in people management.
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of the challenges in the South African schooling system.
  • Proven experience in developing learner materials and moderation.
  • Proven working knowledge of effective teaching, assessment, and classroom pedagogy for underprepared students.
 
Recommendations:
  • A PhD and a publication record.
  • 10 years of teaching experience
