Job description

The Department of Architecture (DOA) is a progressive design-led architecture school, exploring the making of contextually appropriate and culture-driven environments through centring African intellectual discourse. The DOA enables collaborative, process-driven, and differentiated quality learning and research to benefit society, design, and the environment. The DOA curriculum responds to the diverse opportunities presented by its location in Johannesburg in Gauteng province through its three undergraduate programs - The Bachelor of Architecture, the Diploma in Architecture, and the Advanced Diploma in Architecture.
 
Job Description:
 
The incumbent will be tasked to broaden the scope of architecture in the Department through collaborative processes of innovative teaching of design, research, and processes of making. We focus on developing relevant teaching philosophies, imaginative studio culture, and new ways of making through our fabrication laboratory, the FABLAB, related to the changing nature of the contemporary city and its decolonized teaching and learning agenda. This model is explored by integrating mutually productive relationships between physical, theoretical, and material contexts- the field and the studio. 

Responsibilities: 
 
The incumbent will be expected to:
  • Present design studios, construction, and theory lectures and workshops at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Assess students and administer the modules.
  • Assist with curriculum development, module- coordination, and administration in modules.
  • Actively undertake research and creative productions that lead to research outcomes/publications.
  • Participate in community engagement programs and projects.
  • Assist with administrative duties as determined by the Head of the Department or the Executive Dean.
  • Initiate, develop, and support research within the staff body.
  • Programme administration via the online platforms to the faculty.

Minimum requirements

  • Master’s degree in architecture or relevant design discipline
  • At least three years of proven practice experience in the built environment or three years of lecturing experience at the tertiary level.
  • Relevant discipline- based knowledge/experience.
  • Evidence of participation in curriculum innovation and education
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Good language and communication skills
  • Good computer and graphic skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel; CAD: Revit: Rhino 
  • Potential to become an academic of high standing.
  • Academic writing skills as evidenced by publications in relevant journals or participation in conference proceedings and production of creative outputs.
  • Team player and collegial
  • Willingness and ability to engage directly with research upon taking up office.
 
Recommendations:
  • Registration with SACAP
  • Ability to relate teaching to research and creative practice or work and vice versa.
  • Experience or ability to work within the strategic objectives of the university.
  • Experience or ability to work with the concepts of Decolonisation and 4IR.
  • Familiarity with online learning platforms/ blended learning tools.
  • Involvement with Community engagement
  • Interest to begin the PhD process upon appointment
