Job description
- Assume responsibility to teach modules enlisted for the Geography programme in the Department, especially for undergraduate teaching programmes in human and environmental geography.
- Annually publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited academic journals and deliver papers at national and international conferences, commensurate with the level of appointment.
- Actively supervise BA/BSc Honours, Masters and Doctoral students in Human Geography and related subdisciplines.
- Obtain research funding from external funding bodies.
- Perform administrative and ad hoc duties as the needs require.
Minimum requirements
- Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Human Geography.
- Provide certified copies of completed doctoral degree certificate/s or evaluated SAQA equivalents for foreign qualifications.
- Have sound proficiency in the various study fields falling within Human Geography.
- Have an understanding and knowledge background in one or more of the subfields of Human Geography such as Urban Geography, Tourism Geography, Political Geography and additional expertise in Environmental Geography would be considered an advantage.
- Have a record of publishing academic papers in accredited scientific journals commensurate with the level of appointment.
- Have a national and/or international intellectual network.
- Have a track record or willingness to apply for external research funding
- Proven skill in Human Geography and related sub-disciplines.
- Ability to apply all the relevant skills in addressing critical issues in Human Geography.
- Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
- Teaching experience at a tertiary level.
- Previous involvement in developing a university learning programme.
- PhD in Geography with specialization in Human Geography.
- Participation in joint research projects, with the supervision of postgraduate students in Human Geography or related study fields.
- An NRF rating would advance the applicant’s chances of being successful. If the applicant has no NRF rating, he/she should be in the position to apply for a rating within 3/4 years of being appointed.
