Job description

The UJ Faculty of Art Design & Architecture (FADA) seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer in the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA). The GSA is the largest graduate school of architecture in Africa and has established itself as a progressive and innovative nexus of architectural training, education, and research. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to the shaping, management, and delivery world-class programmes in Architecture as part of  the school’s hallmark transformative pedagogical and research goals.
 
Responsibilities:
 
The incumbent will be expected to fulfil the responsibilities of a Senior Lecturer, which include:
  • Teaching and assessing in relevant postgraduate modules, including the joint professional BArch(Hons)/MArch programme, the MArch (DTP), PhD and Advanced Design Research initiatives.
  • Contributing to the supervision of postgraduate students in the GSA’s Unit System.
  • Leading research efforts in practice-based and creative outputs, especially in the fields of architecture, design realisation (making), history, theory, and practice.
  • Developing and expanding the GSA’s national and international profile and partnerships.
  • Contributing to the administration, leadership, and strategic initiatives within the GSA.
  • Engaging in societal and professional community outreach that enhances the profile of the GSA, the Faculty and university.
  • Contributing to ongoing research projects, exhibitions, and other creative outputs.

Minimum requirements

  • A relevant doctorate (NQF 10 level) PhD and a sustained track record of teaching and research with a specialised course or programme; or an appropriate professional qualification and significant relevant professional experience at a senior level.  
  • Extensive experience in professional architectural practice.
  • A proven record of research, including peer-reviewed publications, exhibitions, or other creative outputs.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead Unit System teaching and engage with both practice-led and design-led research.
  • At least three years of tertiary-level teaching experience.
  • Expertise in architectural history and theory, with a focus on cultural theory, African, diasporic, or post-colonial architectural practices.

  • A commitment to transforming architectural pedagogy and practice, particularly in the context of African and diasporic architecture.
  • A strong understanding of contemporary and emerging design pedagogies, including research-led practice and teaching.
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Evidence of post graduate supervision, especially at Master’s and ideally at doctoral level.
  • Skills in other aspects of the Architecture programme will be considered an advantage.
  • An NRF rating or the ability to obtain one in three years will be considered an advantage.
  • Registration with South African Council for the Architectural Profession - or in the case of international candidates evidence of equivalent level of registration/licensure. 
  • Experience or ability to work with the concepts of Decolonization and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
  • Familiarity with online learning platforms/ blended learning tools.
