The primary responsibilities of the Manager: Maintenance is to manage all preventative maintenance contractors and contracts related to multiyear maintenance contracts which fall within Central Technical Services. The role covers all four University of Johannesburg campuses viz. Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus, Doornfontein and Soweto; as well as any other UJ properties that may require support.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Develop and implement maintenance strategies and plans aligned with the vision of the University of Johannesburg.
  • Ability to successfully develop, interpret, and apply policies and regulations in a complex university setting.
  • Compile and manage the annual budget related to all preventative maintenance of infrastructure and equipment efficiently and effectively.
  • Manage the preventative maintenance function effectively by ensuring reduction in real cost and improvement of facilities.
  • Provide maintenance of infrastructure and equipment related input into the Campus Master Plan Steering Committee.
  • Develop and update infrastructure and equipment maintenance plans according to the university strategic plan.
  • Implement / Manage Computer Aided Facilities Management Systems to assist with Maintenance and Management of infrastructure and equipment.
  • Oversee the implementation and the management of maintenance related contractual agreements.

Minimum requirements

  • Postgraduate qualification in Mechanical or Electrical (NQF 8) or equivalent is essential.
  • Five (5) years' maintenance management experience in a multi-functional environment is essential.
  • Five (5) years' people management experience is essential.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Maintenance Management Systems.
  • At least three (3) years' computerised maintenance management system experience.
  • Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa or other relevant professional body.
  • A valid driver's license.
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Excellent written, verbal, listening and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to make complex decisions with high levels of discretion.
  • Successful track record building consensus and influencing senior leadership and stakeholders in order to implement new strategies related to maintenance of the infrastructure and equipment.
  • Effective customer service, people management and team leadership skills.
  • Excellent computer skills i.e. Microsoft or Excel
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current and relevant preventative maintenance methodologies
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Masters degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial)
  • Advanced qualification / certification in Maintenance Management.
  • Government Certificate of Competence.
  • A working knowledge of facilities management software systems with regard to management and maintenance of infrastructure and infrastructure related assets.
  • Managing and operating within the Facilities Management/Technical Services
