Job description

The Department of Communication and Media is part of the School of Communication in the Faculty of Humanities. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Communication and Media and offers Honours degrees in Communication theory, Journalism, and Film and Television, as well as supervision up to postdoctoral level. The Department aims to play a critical role in both the University and the wider society by contributing to debates on the role of media, journalism, film and television in shaping society. The Department is dedicated to producing well-trained graduates who can adapt to and make their mark in these fast-changing cultural industries.
The Department seeks to appoint a Associate Professor/ Professor in the Department on a permanent contract. The incumbent should be a high calibre scholar, practitioner and innovative thinker who will take on a strong leadership role and continue to build the Department’s profile and standing nationally and internationally. The incumbent will teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise, produce research at a high level, and contribute to academic citizenship.
 
Responsibilities: 

  • Teach theoretical and practical courses across the year groups from undergraduate to postgraduate;
  • Course coordination, curriculum development and associated administration;
  • Publish in peer-reviewed, accredited publications;
  • Recruit and supervise postgraduate students, including post-doctoral fellows;
  • Build and maintain national and international external partners, including within the media industry.


Minimum requirements

  • A relevant Doctoral degree in Communication and Media or a commensurate field;
  • A research track record;
  • Teaching experience commensurate with the level of the post;
  • A solid track record of postgraduate supervision. For the SL level, this can be at the level of Honours and Masters. For the AP/P level, it should include MA, Doctoral and Postdoctoral supervision.
  • The ability to cross-teach in communication theory, journalism, film and television.

  • Experience of raising and managing grant funds in a research context;
