Job Description:

Lecturer in Applied Communication Skills and Academic Literacy

Responsibilities:  
 
  • Lecture undergraduate modules per year in the Applied Communication Skills courses at the University of Johannesburg.
  • Fulfil all tasks and responsibilities associated with lecturing, which includes, but is not limited to, the development of study guides and Blackboard content, physical teaching, possible online teaching, the development of assessments, marking, managing tutors, and performing administrative tasks associated with lecturing.
  • Submit student marks before departmental due dates.
  • Build and promote the Applied Communication Skills courses at the University of Johannesburg.
  • Actively promote postgraduate studies in LanCSAL.
  • Supervise honours research essays to completion.
  • Supervise masters and doctoral candidates to completion.
  • Conduct research resulting in published output in reputable, accredited journals.
  • Present papers at reputable academic conferences (at both local and international level).
  • Carry out administrative tasks as required by UJ’s policies and regulations and the Department of LanCSAL

Minimum requirements

  • Master’s degree in English, Communication, Linguistics, or Academic Literacy (experts in Education will also be considered) and working towards a doctoral degree.
  • Higher Education teaching experience of at least 2 years
  • Supervision experience.

Competencies and Behavioral Attributes:

  • Competency in curriculum development.
  • Competency in assessment development.
 
 Recommendations:

  • Competency in Blackboard or a related online-teaching platform.
  • Specialisation in Applied Communication Skills and Academic Literacy.
  • Two years’ lecturing experience in Communication Skills or a related discipline.
  • One year’s postgraduate supervision experience.
