Job Description:
 
The Department of Education and Curriculum is one of five departments in the Faculty of Education at UJ. It is a dynamic and innovative department, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the following fields:
  • B.Ed
  • PGCE
  • Curriculum Studies
  • Languages, Literacy and Literature
 
The department is seeking to appoint a suitable candidate at Lecturer level to contribute to the initial teacher education programmes (B.Ed. and PGCE), post-graduate teaching and supervision and research in education theory, curriculum theory and research methodology.
 
Applications are invited for the academic post of Lecturer: Education Theory, Curriculum Theory and Research Methodology. We seek an individual with excellent academic credentials in teaching and research in this field.
 
Responsibilities:  
  • Teaching Education Theory and Practice (Philosophy of Education, Sociology of Education and History of Education).
  • Teaching Curriculum Theory and Practice.
  • Teaching Research Methodology at postgraduate level.
  • Supervising student research at postgraduate level.
  • Involvement in teaching (contact, blended and online) at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Playing a leading role in online teaching innovation.
  • Administration related to teaching and research, including materials development.
  • Involvement in national and international research projects. 
  • Procurement of funding for research.
  • Involvement in core activities of the department such as academic administration, research, assessing students during WIL, short learning programme development and delivery, marketing, and community engagement projects.

Minimum requirements

To be appointed at Lecturer level, the successful candidate must meet the following criteria:
  • An appropriate master's degree in education (M. ED). The successful candidate will be required to undertake a doctorate qualification (NQF10) within a four-year (4) year period after being appointed to the Lecturer position.
  • Recommended: PhD/ D. Ed Degree in Education.
  • A track record of exemplary teaching abilities.
  • Experience teaching large classes.
  • Experience in teaching Education Theory, Curriculum Theory and Research Methodology at tertiary level.
  • Accredited research output in Education.
  • Supervision of students at Post Graduate level.
  • A research footprint (presenting at local conferences/research forums).
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills
  • Good planning and organisational skills
  • Good interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues
  • A well-developed scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Adept at developing teaching materials for online education
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Teaching experience in Education Theory and Practice, Curriculum Theory and Practice and Research Methodology at tertiary level.
  • Supervision of postgraduate students.
  • A defined research trajectory that has resulted in good quality peer-reviewed publications.
