Job Description:

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg was recently ranked the 2nd best philosophy department in the country. It prides itself on being dynamic, inclusive, diverse, and responsive to the needs of its students. We teach sizeable undergraduate classes and have the largest postgraduate community in the country with close to 70 students. Its staff are active researchers and publish regularly in accredited journals and with reputable presses. The Department has research strengths in the philosophy of science and medicine, philosophy of art and aesthetics, African Feminism, epistemic decolonisation, epistemic injustice, Indian philosophy, 19th and 20th century European thought, including German Idealism, phenomenology, and psychoanalysis. The Department is affiliated with several research centres, including the African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (ACEPS), Centre for Philosophy of Epidemiology, Medicine and Public Health (CPEMPH), Karl Mittermaier Centre for Philosophy of Economics (KMCPE), and the Centre for Phenomenology in South Africa (CPSA).

The successful candidate will be expected to teach, supervise and lead philosophy at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the Department of Philosophy. All areas of specialization in philosophy will be considered, but preference may be given to candidates specializing in ethics, environmental ethics, feminism, and social, political and legal philosophy.

Responsibilities:  
 
The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Contribute significantly to the research profile of the Department by completing a PhD and publish journal articles and chapters in accredited outlets.
  • Contribute to the supervision of postgraduate students at Honours, MA and PHD level.
  • Take on a full teaching load, commensurate with rank, at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Efficiently and reliably handle administrative duties commensurate with rank.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD in Philosophy.
  • Track record of publications in accredited journals and presses.
  • Extensive experience as a lecturer in a philosophy department.
