The University of Johannesburg invites suitably qualified individuals to apply for the position of Professor (permanent position).
 
The School of Economics is one of six schools within the College of Business & Economics (CBE). The core activity of the School of Economics is to train economists in various fields of economics (financial engineering, financial economics, industrial policy, development economics, innovation, local economic development, econometrics, competition & regulation economics, environmental economics, and trade economics).
 
The applicants to this post are expected to support our economics programmes by performing full academic duties that include teaching, postgraduate supervision, and research. The ideal applicant will possess a strong interest and experience in both teaching and conducting research specifically in the areas of Innovation and Development Economics.
 
Responsibilities:
 
The incumbent will be expected to:

 

  • Be able to lecture and supervise Master’s/PhD students.
  • Provide supervision to postgraduate students.
  • Support the School in the transition to an internationally recognized research entity.
  • Contribute to the global stature of the School.
  • Publish in accredited journals.
  • Mentor junior colleagues.
  • Participate in community involvement.
  • Participate in departmental activities.
  • Be able to conduct and publish high-quality research.

Minimum requirements

For appointment at Professor level:
  • A minimum requirement of a PhD in Economics or related disciplines (e.g. Econometrics, International Relations, Finance, Development Studies) and a strong publication record.
  • Extensive experience in quantitative research, including contemporary econometric techniques.
  • Appropriate teaching and practical experience, with proven research ability.
  • The ability to publish research findings in highly ranked accredited/peer-reviewed journals is the most important requirement for the position.
  • Computer literacy with knowledge of different econometrics packages and the ability to keep pace with the new development in the field of Economics/Econometrics.
  • The candidate must be willing to teach in various areas of economics when required, and also on various campuses within UJ.

Recommendations:
 
  • A strong background in teaching and learning practices, teaching and learning innovations and program management.
  • The ability to publish in highly ranked accredited/ peer reviewed journals.
  • An NRF rating (or equivalent), or the capability of obtaining one within three to five years.
  • A strong background in Quantitative Research.
  • Rated researchers (NRF rating or any international rating) would be given priority.
