Job description

This senior position falls under the DSI/NRF South African Research Chair in Industrial Development  (SARChI-ID), led by Prof Fiona Tregenna. This is a prestigious research centre, falling under the College of Business and Economics, funded by South Africa's Department of Science and Innovation through the National Research Foundation. Our activities are centred around research, training and capacity-building, and public and policy engagement. The University of Johannesburg is a leading centre of research in industrial development and related topics, with a number of researchers in research centres and in the College of Business and Economics, making for a dynamic environment with multiple possibilities for fruitful collaboration.
 
The incumbent will be responsible for:
 
  • Undertake research and publish extensively, especially in high-impact journals.
  • Be involved in initiating and managing research projects.
  • Supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows.
  • Initiate and contribute to dissemination, training, engagement and other events.
  • Assist in overall management and co-ordination of SARChI-ID; support and deputise for the Chair holder as appropriate; and contribute to the various activities of SARChI-ID.
  • Initiate, develop and/or be involved in research networks, collaborations, institutional partnerships, and grant applications.

Minimum requirements

For appointment at Associate Professor Level:
  • A Doctoral qualification (preferably in economics; applicants with a doctorate in a cognate discipline and with relevant expertise will also be considered).
  • Relevant specialisation.
  • An excellent record of relevant academic publications.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students.

Recommendations:
 
  • Expertise in or linked to the field of industrial development.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students will be a recommendation for appointment at Senior Lecturer level (this is a requirement for appointment at Associate Professor level).
  • Experience in initiating, being awarded and/or managing large research projects.
  • An NRF rating (or equivalent), or the capability of obtaining one within three to five years.
  • Evidence of sourcing external research funding
 
While this centre falls within the field of economics, applicants with a strong background in related disciplines (such as development studies) and with relevant field specialisations and skills may also be considered. We welcome applicants with research specialisations in fields such as development economics, political economy, trade, innovation, and economics of technology or industrial organisation. Expertise related to the field of industrial development (for example, but not limited to, topics such as industrial policy, structural change, technology, innovation, industrialisation, financialisation, industry and climate change, etc.) would be at a strong advantage.
