Job Description:

The Department of Chemical Sciences is an academic unit within the Faculty of Science. The core functions of the department are teaching, training and research. The department is situated on both the APK Campus in Auckland Park, and the DFC campus in Johannesburg.

The department has one vacancy for an instrument scientist to assist with the running of the state-of-the-art research equipment in ICP-MS and/or chromatography (HPLC, GC etc)

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will share responsibility for the day-to-day operation, monitoring and routine maintenance of the instrumentation and ancillary equipment (chillers, pumps). (S)he will analyse various samples, instruct users on how to use the equipment for routine analyses, and take an active part in the development of analytical methods and protocols. Must be able to take ad hoc responsibilities as assigned by line manager.

Minimum requirements

• BSc Honors degree or equivalent (with 3 years’ experience), MSc (preferably in analytical chemistry, with 1 year experience) or any relevant higher qualification.
• Evidence of community and/or industrial involvement would be beneficial.
• Sound communication skills in English.

Recommendations:

• Laboratory experience, at a Higher Education Institution or industry.
• A track record of having worked with at least 50% of listed techniques.
• Able to work under pressure
