Job description

The Division of Arts & Culture is seeking to appoint a Senior Choir Master to manage and train UJ Choir to enhance the UJ Brand, add value to the UJ student experience, and serve the community by providing excellent standard of choral music of a variety of genres.
 
Responsibilities:
 
The incumbent will be expected to:
  • Conduct initial auditions annually.
  • Facilitate annual development camps.
  • Conduct regular rehearsals throughout academic term to develop choristers’
    • Musical skills;
    • Group singing skills;
    • Listening skills;
    • Vocal skills;
    • Music reading skills (sight reading classes for inexperienced singers during first four months);
    • Discipline; and
    • Mentoring.
  • Regular performances at:
    • Graduation ceremonies;
    • Other UJ events;
    • Community events;
    • Other universities and with choirs from abroad; and
    • Radio / TV engagements.
  • Organising choir events and concert tours.
  • Selecting appropriate music and compile a repertoire to ensure variety and high standards are achieved.
  • Select and obtain new music and staying relevant regarding choral trends, new composers, compositions and the choral repertoire in general.
  • Maintaining music and CD library of the choir.
  • Liaising with other choirs/conductors nationally and internationally.
  • Planning annual activities according to UJ calendar and with best interest of students in mind.
  • Take responsibility for arrangements of choir tours, including travel arrangements, accommodation, and concerts.
  • Manage and co-ordinate all relevant activities to produce high quality recordings to market and uphold the branding of UJ Choir.

  • Managing Choir budget with assistance of the division’s Head and Financial Manager.
  • Acting as music liaison officer for UJ.
  • Adjudicating Eisteddfods and competitions in capacity as UJ choir leader.
  • Choir workshops outside UJ.
  • Compiling and editing info for choir programmes and CD booklet.

Minimum requirements

  • Degree or any relevant qualification (NQF 7), with two (2) to three (3) years' job-related experience OR
  • Diploma (NQF 6) with relevant professional certification and three (3) to five (5) years' of job-related experience
