Job description

The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) is a leading research intensive faculty at the University of Johannesburg, producing over 750 ROU (research outputs units) per year. The faculty has a goal of promoting innovation in research with a particular focus on encouraging intellectual property generation by its academic staff. In support of the university internationalization goals, academics need to form strong collaboration and partnerships with others both locally and internationally. The faculty is responsible for creating this vibrant research intensive culture via the role of the Executive Dean and the Vice-Deans are expected to play a leading role in promoting this. This position reports to the Executive Dean.
 
Job Description:
The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) is actively recruiting an Associate Professor/Professor to serve as Vice-Dean Research, Innovation and Internationalisation (for an initial period of 3 years) to assist the Executive Dean of FEBE in the fulfilment of his duties and to head up this exciting and important portfolio.
 
The Vice-Dean Research, Innovation and Internationalisation is primarily responsible for FEBE research, the postgraduate student portfolio, the internationalisation thereof, as well as the transfer of knowledge into the undergraduate domain in collaboration with the Vice Dean: Teaching and Learning. The portfolio includes PG Diplomas, Honours, Masters and Doctoral programmes.
 
 
Responsibilities:
 
  1. Provides academic leadership in the areas of postgraduate studies[1], research, innovation and internationalization;
  2. Actively promotes and supports 4IR research initiatives, projects, and postgraduate teaching modules, alignment with the vision of the University of Johannesburg.
  3. Manages and chairs all the faculty functions/committees whose purposes are in the areas of research, innovation and internationalization;
  4. Manages the FEBE visiting academics portfolio that includes academic visiting positions and postdoctoral research fellows;
  5. Promotes inter-faculty collaborations; transdisciplinary research and teaching activities through collaborations with other faculties;
  6. Works with other UJ entities that are research, innovation, entrepreneurship based to increase the impact of the faculty research; works with the Technology Transfer Office to promote a culture of start-ups and entrepreneurial activities at UJ;
  7. Regularly monitors and reports on research performance, graduate research outputs, postgraduate outputs and develop strategies to ensure targets are achieved;
  8. Continues to conduct their own research and supervision of graduate students;
  9. Advances the disciplines in FEBE through community engagement and active participation in voluntary associations / professional societies; and
  10. Actively demonstrates understanding and delivers on the UJ Strategic Plan targets in respect of postgraduate studies, research, innovation and internationalisation.
  11. Actively supports academics in the faculty with research grant applications.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD and experience in areas aligned to the fourth industrial revolution
  • At least five years’ experience in the academic environment;
  • National Research Foundation (NRF) Rating (in exceptional cases, where the applicant is not rated, the candidate must achieve NRF rating within 1 year);
  • Strong commitment to research-led teaching, research and innovation;
  • Evidence of developing external research grant applications and success thereof and
  • Experience in management such as research centre director, group head or head of department,
