Job Description:

To supervise the carpentry maintenance teams in discharging their responsibilities and ensuring execution of preventative maintenance and timeous reactive maintenance. Managing the department and generating of weekly reports and any other carpentry related reports which may be required.  Planning and assigning of work and ensuring execution completion of job cards and any relevant tasks within turnaround time.

Responsibilities: 
 
  • Perform the duties of a Foreman Carpentry & Joinery in conformity to OHS Act in order to comply with the regulations and Act, and to ensure that staff and students are in a safe environment.
  • Implement carpentry & joinery maintenance strategies and tactics, and to schedule tasks with reference to the maintenance plan and philosophies.
  • Ensure that the carpentry infrastructure and installations are optimally available for the operational and business continuity purposes and to avoid disastrous situations and Health & Safety Risks and Hazards.
  • Supervise staff effectively and ensure that tasks are executed qualitatively and within an acceptable time-frame.
  • Assist in the compilation of an asset register and maintain the register with reference to infrastructure, installation, equipment, and tools.
  • Assist with the compilation of the Carpentry budget and the control of the expenditure.
  • Advise the management regarding the latest technology and legislation to contribute to the effective use of resources.
  • Communication & reporting to users, clients & stakeholders regarding their requests, jobs and/or projects.
  • Improving production and performance of the department.
  • Fostering conformance with Health & Safety precautions at all times.
  • Mentoring and coaching of staff who require assistance in order to ensure effective skills development and a safe working environment.
  • Ensure that the staff is qualified to perform their tasks as required in legislation and for quality assurance purposes.
  • Assist with skill development and internal training of staff.
  • Ensure that employees perform to standards
  • Monitor resource balancing and workload
  • Ensuring all carpentry assets and infrastructure is available and reliable for its users
  • Supervise staff effectively and ensure that tasks are qualitatively executed within turnaround times and acceptable time frames
  • Action orientated, calm & composed, established technical knowledge, & team orientated disposition.
  • Management of materials, spare and ordering thereof .
  • Planning & administration of procurement processes for projects and sourcing of contractors where applicable & necessary
  • Ensure adherence to Occupational Health & Safety Act and Risk Assessments 
  • Ensure proper work control and management
  • Preparation of Weekly reports, specifications etc.

Minimum requirements

  • NQF Level 6 Qualification (National Diploma or equivalent)
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years’ appropriate experience in Carpentry maintenance and/or construction environment.
  • A Valid Driver’s License
  • Knowledge and experience of carpentry repairs, maintenance, and installation
  • Knowledge of carpentry codes and standards
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Regulations

  • Basic knowledge of Building Regulations
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations

Recommendations:

  • Prior experience in the Higher Education Institution
  • Trade Test Certificate in Carpentry
  • Knowledge of University rules, regulations, and policies
