Job description

The UJ Library IT Department is setting the benchmark in South Africa when it comes to Library systems and desktop support.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Actively develops and maintains the relationship and partnership of the library with the Faculty/Departments in support of information service and research support.
  • Manages client relationships to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Liaises, networks, and collaborates with all stakeholders of the faculty, peers and the community.
  • Facilitates a relevant and effective information service to the Faculty/Departments by taking responsibility.
  • Performs subject specific searches.
  • Keeps abreast with relevant resources, new developments, technologies, and trends to advise and propose the most suitable choice of material in all formats.
  • Partners with the Faculty to embed personalised assistance to staff and students to embed subject course content within the curriculum and specific courses.
  • Keeps abreast with new developments, technologies and trends regarding specific subjects/courses, their curricula, etc.
  • Embeds with the Faculty’s/Departments’ specific subject developments and curricula.
  • Delivers current awareness and alerting services for the faculty according to subjects, profiles, and needs.
  • Provides additional services/methods to keep clients Informed.
  • Builds, manages, and maintains a dynamic, balanced, relevant subject specific collection (print and electronic) of information resources in collaboration with the academics in the faculty.
  • Provides regular reports to the faculty on the status of service delivery.
  • Creates and maintains appropriate and accurate working files.
  • Compiles accurate library reports e.g. monthly reports and reviews and keeps accurate statistics.
  • Participates in Library and professional surveys, e.g. LibQual.

Minimum requirements

  • A degree in Library and Information Science or an equivalent (NQF 7)
  • 5 years’ experience in an academic library
 
Recommendations:
  • Post-graduate studies (e.g. Honours or masters’ degree) are desirable to understand the research process better to support the researcher accordingly.
  • Three years’ experience within all functions of the library of which one year supervisory or managerial experience.
  • Subject specific and general knowledge.
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
  • Knowledge of information resources in various formats, and the retrieval thereof.
  • Knowledge of information training, presentation and evaluation methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of marketing methods/procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the research process and its methodology.
  • Knowledge of Library policies, procedures and processes.
  • Knowledge to manage and operate library systems, various social media, mobile and other device applications.
  • Knowledge and practical use of Microsoft packages – products relevant to job profile.
  • Knowledge of copyright legislation.
  • Client and service focused.
  • Balanced relationship skills, taking the South African culture of diversity into consideration.
  • Responsible, reliable, accountable, and dedicated to professional conduct and ethics.
  • Advanced information retrieval skills in all information formats.
  • Advanced training / mentoring and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Language proficiency.
