Job description

The Education Faculty at the University of Johannesburg offers undergraduate and post graduate degree programmes at the Soweto and the Auckland Park Campuses. In the undergraduate programmes at Soweto Campus, teachers qualify for posts in the foundation and intermediate phases of schooling. In the undergraduate programmes at Auckland Park Campus, teachers qualify for posts in the senior and Further Education and Training (FET) phases of schooling. In addition to the class work, the undergraduate programme is extended by a practicum component where students are required to undertake mandatory Work Integrated Learning (WIL). 
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Manage the academic aspects of WIL in the undergraduate programmes in the faculty
  • Develop and revise curriculum especially those related to teaching methodology and practicum modules
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in blended and online modes
  • Academic administration  
  • Promote student success
  • Promote a publication record with a scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) and WIL research focus
  • Maintain relationships with schools to create opportunities for WIL placements  
  • Supervise postgraduate students
  • Coordinate an academic focus on WIL and work collaboratively with the WIL Coordinator
  • Participation in faculty and university committees

Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s degree in teacher education  
  • At least five years of school teaching experience
  • Experience in partnerships and collaboration with external stakeholders
  • A record of accredited scholarly research outputs
  • At least three years’ experience in the teaching and assessment of undergraduate and post-graduate students at university level
  • A record of postgraduate university supervision at honours, masters and doctoral levels
  • Computer Literacy: proven working knowledge of the MS Office package (MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook) 
 
Recommendations:
 
  • A doctoral degree in teacher education or a related education field
  • Knowledge and understanding of the South African Further Education and Higher Education Environment and regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of Image Now, Oracle and ITS (Integrated Tertiary Software) system
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Ability to think critically, analytically, and laterally across disciplines and sectors and work under pressure.
  • Ability to build a rapport with and develop relations with all stakeholders, including school partners, external mentors, assessors, and SACE. Provide care and support to students and lecturers during WIL sessions  
  • Excellence in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Designing and executing research in the area of specialisation i.e teacher education, including WIL  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work and deal with students, lecturers and schools from diverse backgrounds
  • The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong organisational, management, and logistical skills
  • Must be enthusiastic and build a positive institutional culture
  • Ensure that staff and students comply and abide by the values and mission statements espoused by the University of Johannesburg
