Job description

The School of Public Management, Governance and Public Policy (SPMGPP) is a young, dynamic school in the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at UJ. The SPMGPP strives to generate new knowledge about public management and has a focus on good governance and effective policy development; as well as how to improve public service delivery to businesses and communities in the creation of a developmental enabling environment.
 
The SPMGPP is actively recruiting for a Senior Lecturer to join its team of seasoned academics.
 
To facilitate teaching and research in preferably both the contact and online mode, where appropriate. Interacting with mthe community, stakeholders and partners to work towards the fulfilment of the mission of the UJ
 
Duties:
 
The incumbent will be expected to:
  • Teaching and learning: Delivering engaging and informative lectures on various Public Administration, Public Management and Governance modules, catering to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. 
  • Coordinating both undergraduate and postgraduate modules as well as designing assessments and grading student work accurately and promptly (including marks capturing on MAMS).
  • Research: Engaging in extensive research within the broad fields of Public Administration, contributing to the development of new knowledge and advancements in the discipline. 
  • Research Pipeline: Establishing and maintaining a steady research pipeline to ensure consistent and impactful contributions to the academic community.
  • Professional Partnerships: Cultivating and nurturing professional relationships with industry partners to facilitate collaboration, internships, and research opportunities for students and the SPMGPP.
  • Student Supervision: Providing guidance and supervision to postgraduate students at Honours, Masters, and Doctoral levels, fostering their academic and research growth.
  • Academic Administration: Assisting in academic administrative tasks and contributing to the efficient functioning of the SPMGPP.
  • Committee Participation: Active involvement in SPMGPP and college-level committees, sharing expertise and contributing to the decision-making process.
  • Leadership Support: Contributing to academic leadership initiatives within the SPMGPP.

Minimum requirements

  • A relevant PhD degree in Public Administration (or the equivalent thereof).
  • Lecturing experience in Public Administration and related subjects at a reputable higher education institution.
  • Knowledge of the online learning environment and ability to use and lecture on an online learner management system, e.g., Moodle.
  • Willingness to lecture at the undergraduate level especially large first-year classes.
  • Sound knowledge of Public Administration and related field theories at postgraduate level.
  • Appropriate teaching and practical experience, proven research ability.
  • The ability to publish research findings in high-ranked accredited/peer-reviewed journals is the most important requirement for the position.
  • The candidate must be willing to teach in other areas of Public Administration when required.
  • An excellent record of recent and relevant academic publications.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students at PhD and master’s level.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in Research Methodologies relevant to the Public Administration and related disciplines at postgraduate level.

Recommendations:
 
  • A relevant PhD degree in Public Administration (or the equivalent thereof).
  • Able to lecture both face-to-face and online learning environments with large classes

  • Supervised research projects of postgraduate students successfully at Honours, Masters and Doctoral levels
  • Articulate in quantitative and/or qualitative research methodology skills.
  • Engagement in and a record of DHET accredited research publications and presentations at conferences.
  • A university qualification and experience in teaching research methodologies at the postgraduate level.
