Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer (Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment: Department of Chemical Engineering Technology)

Job description
- Must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and productive research and play a leading role in teaching innovation including the use of online tools.
- Be actively involved in core activities of the department such as teaching, research, academic administration, short-course development, marketing, and community projects.
- Assume responsibility to teach modules for the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Department.
- The incumbent will be expected to lead curriculum development programmes.
- Annually publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited scientific and / or academic journals, and deliver papers at national and international conferences, commensurate with the level of appointment.
- Establish research groups within the Department and drive research activities.
- Mentor postdoctoral research fellows (PDRFs).
- Supervise postgraduate students.
- Supervision of final year undergraduate and honours project students.
- Seek research funding from external funding bodies, national and international funding agencies, and industry.
- Advance the discipline of Chemical Engineering through industrial work, community engagement and active participation in voluntary associations (e.g. SAIChE, SAIMM) / professional societies (e.g. ECSA);
- Actively involved in all Departmental academic and administrative activities/duties (e.g. ECSA accreditation preparations, participation in official meetings and gatherings).
- Computer literacy in some Chemical Engineering related software packages.
- Drive the Global Excellence and Stature (GES) 4.0 objectives of the University of Johannesburg
- Adapt to dynamic changes in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in academia
Minimum requirements
- A doctoral qualification in Chemical Engineering.
- Must have teaching experience at undergraduate and post-graduate tertiary level (more than 5 years).
- Previous involvement in developing university learning programmes, developing new courses, or enriching existing courses.
- Experience in supervising post-graduate students, and evidence of graduated Masters and / or PhD students.
- Proven research excellence and sustained, significant research outputs in ISI accredited journals.
- Evidence of community and / or industrial involvement would be beneficial.
- Evidence of national and international collaboration (academia and / or industry).
- Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning, e.g. an abridged teaching evaluation or portfolio.
- Strong commitment to good teaching and research.
- Sound communication skills in English.
- A good / successful Research fundraising record of accomplishment.
- Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineer/Technologist or eligible to register within one year.
- NRF rated or eligible to apply for NRF rating within one year.
- BEng Tech or BSc (Eng) or B Eng in Chemical Engineering will be a substantial advantage.
- Teaching experience, at a Higher Education Institution, 5-10 years.
- Experience with ECSA Graduate Attribute (GA) assessment at university level will be preferable.
- A track record of post-graduate research supervision and publications.
- NRF Rating will be an added advantage.
- An h-index of 8 (for SL) or 10 (for AP) is preferred.
- Should fit with current thrusts of the department.
- Innovative teaching techniques incorporating blended learning.
- Ability to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
- A reasonable period of experience in industry or a research organization (3 years or more) in the stated fields will be an advantage.
- Training and/or having experience in process design will be an advantage.
- Experience of strong academic leadership.
- Excellent written and verbal English communications skills.
- Excellent teaching skills.
- Good planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to apply relevant skills in addressing chemical engineering problems.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to self-manage own research group.
- Strong interpersonal relationships as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.
- Industrial experience.
- Relevant evidence of discipline advancement and/or community engagement projects.
- Evidence of professional development.
- Evidence of relevant research capacity.
