Job description

Job Description:

To investigate all crimes. misconduct reported and conduct compliance inspections as well as identify risk areas to Protection Services/University. To keep and analyze statistics of all incidents reported to Protection Services to plan, develop, organize, advise, implement, and participate in a variety of crime prevention and – awareness strategies and campaigns directed to the campus community.

Responsibilities:

Compliance Risk and Enforcement (Investigation)

  • Conduct full investigations in line with legally acceptable investigating techniques.
  • Timeously respond to priority crimes when required.
  • Manage crime scenes according to training & SOP’s until hand-over to SAPS.
  • Register anonymously reported incidents to Compliance Risk and Enforcement (CRE).
  • Be able to document and give an accurate incident report.
  • Draft precise investigation reports of high reporting standards.
  • Offer a friendly, helpful, and effective Compliance Risk and Enforcement service to all university users.
  • Keep accurate crime statistics, analyze the same, and recommend crime prevention strategies.
  • Gather, preserve and share evidence pertinent to an investigation in line with the relevant regulations and UJ policies.
  • To actively participate in Community Police Forum (CPF) and other crime prevention forums.
  • Draft management reports as required.
  • Keep up to date with the latest investigation technology and techniques.
  • Conduct and report on risks identified from social media monitoring and environmental scanning.
  • Conduct satisfactory client service surveys.
  • Conduct inspections for compliance with relevant regulations and UJ policies.

Crime Prevention

  • Implement and participate in crime prevention and awareness campaigns.
  • Make recommendations to mitigate risks based on an investigation conducted.
  • Analyse incident statistics to determine trends and recommend security measures to prevent further occurrences.
  • Liaise with SAPS to obtain feedback on cases reported.
  • Interfaces with UJ Strategic Communications regarding crime prevention programs and other UJ crime-related issues.
  • Serve as an information resource as far as crime threats are concerned to the campus community.
  • Make input on relevant new policies.
  • Preparing and delivering oral presentations to student/staff groups when required.

Minimum requirements

  • Degree (B-Tech: Policing, B-Tech: Forensic Investigation; Criminology, Law, etc.) or any relevant qualification (NQF 7), with 2 to 3 years of job-related experience in investigations within the campus environment, SAPS, military, Government, or private sector, protection services would be an advantage.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Good Report Writing skills.
  • Understand the Constitution of South Africa, Human Rights, Criminal Law, Law of Evidence POPI Act, etc.
  • Have PSIRA Grade A registration or be eligible for registration.
  • Computer skills (MS Office, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel).
  • Respond to emergencies on campus within a reasonable time.
  • Be available to work after hours and on weekends when necessary.
  • Be able to work under pressures and setbacks.

  • Preferred: detailed investigation report writing experience.

  • Preferred: 5 years’ experience, as an investigator in a campus environment, SAPS, Government, or private sector.
