Job description

The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Johannesburg, wishes to appoint a Full Professor qualified  with extensive experience in the field of Photodynamic Therapy, Phytochemicals and Cancer, who will contribute actively towards research, teaching and learning, in line with the vision, mission, and goals of the University of Johannesburg.
 
The successful candidate is expected to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision respectively, contribute to the day to day running and management of research laboratory and, where necessary, become involved in community outreach and CPD activities, in line with the discipline/Research centre specific objectives.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Teaching undergraduate students using diverse methods in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
  • Actively involved in core activities of the research centre such as planning and conducting research, administration, and external research funding applications.
  • Supervise postgraduate student's projects and actively participate in the research focus areas of the centre, producing research outputs, engaging collaborations and conference presentations. 
  • Facilitate research within the domain of photodynamic therapy, phytochemicals and cancer.
  • Overseeing laboratory operations assisting with laboratory planning and organization.
  • Promoting research and recruiting suitable candidates for post-graduate studies at the Laser Research Centre
  • Maintaining a scholarly profile in line with position in an academic department
  • Involvement in community engagement.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD qualification in Biological/Life Sciences.
  • Minimum five (10) years’ experience in research at university level and 3 years of postdoctoral experience in the selected research field
  • Minimum eight (8) years’ experience in lecturing at university level in appropriate lecturing subjects
  • Track record of publication in international accredited journals
  • NRF rating
  • Track record of securing external research funding
  • Postgraduate (masters and doctorate) and Postdoctoral fellow supervision
  • Involvement in community engagement
  • Established national and international collaboration
  • National and/or international academic and research committee and society membership
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Excellent command in the field of photodynamic therapy, phytochemicals and cancer
  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills
  • Teaching skills and good interpersonal skills as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Good planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to self-manage own research group.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for education, research, and community engagement
  • The ability to function independently as well as in a team.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to perform under pressure
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Research experience in photodynamic therapy, phytochemicals, cancer stem cells, nanotechnology, natural product research, 3D culture, spectroscopy, microscopy and imaging.
  • Innovative teaching techniques and research project designing for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
