Job description

The Faculty of Engineering & Built Environments prides itself in its vibrant, dynamic, and diverse engineering community of scholars who are passionate about enhancing the learning experience of students, enhancing the research profile of the Faculty, and enhancing the academic, social, and economic impact of the Faculty’s teaching and research programmes.
 
The Department of Mechanical Engineering Science offers accredited engineering programmes in Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Masters, and PhD in Engineering. The candidate will be expected to teach, perform research, supervise students and participate in services required by the Department.
 
Responsibilities: 
 
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the mechanical engineering disciplines of (not limited to) Design, Thermodynamics, Graphical Communications, Thermofluids, Theory of Machine, Theromachine, and Manufacturing Methods, Sustainable Energy, etc.
  • Computer literacy in typical Mechanical Engineering software packages (for example Solidworks, ANSYS, Mathematica, LabView, etc.).
  • Conducting research, publishing papers, supervising projects, and laboratory work (at undergraduate and postgraduate level).
  • Being involved in all the Departmental academic and administrative activities (e.g. invigilation, participation in official meetings and gatherings).
  • Supervise postgraduate students (Masters and Doctorate).
  • Liaise with Industry so that the department can get research projects and funding for students.
  • Be involved in community engagement.

Minimum requirements

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (preferred, due to ECSA requirement) or a closely related (NQF 10 or equivalent);
  • A minimum of three to five years of teaching experience at a tertiary institution, or
  • Evidence of strong research outputs, and postgraduate supervision.
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Registration with a local professional body (e.g., ECSA).
  • A minimum of three years of industrial experience.
  • Strong publications record, and the ability to seek significant funding.
 
Competencies:
 
  • Relevant evidence of discipline advancement and/or community engagement projects.
  • Fluent in English, teaching demonstration would be required.
  • Evidence of strong research capacity.
  • Evidence of relevant industrial participants.
  • Evidence of professional development.
