Job Description:

The University of Johannesburg is seeking a dynamic and experienced Manager to lead and expand the commercial and training operations of the School of Tourism & Hospitality (STH), namely TheKerzner@UJ. The STH develops future-fit leadership for the Tourism & Hospitality sector by providing both high-quality programme offerings as well as facilities which host functions and events. The commercial facilities and services offered by TheKerzner@UJ add to the high-quality teaching & learning environment and which the students are exposed to.

Responsibilities:

To manage TheKerzner@UJ outlets, functions and events, facilities and services to ensure a high-quality teaching & learning environment with a commercial component.

Key performance areas include:

General Management:

  • Manage overall operations in relation to functions and events hosted.
  • Ensure the optimal and productive utilisation of the facilities.
  • Ensure the facilities are always maintained.

Human Resource Management:

  • Manage the recruitment of staff.
  • Training & development of staff.
  • Performance Management
  • Oversee employee relations and staff well-being.

Financial Management:

  • Ensure that financial controls are in place and maintained; Financial reporting; Preparation of budgets; Pricing & revenue management strategy).
  • Financial management – ensuring a financially sustainable commercial operation that also facilitates effective student learning

Training:

  • Managing the unique opportunities for Work-Integrated Learning-WIL
  • Facilitate optimal learning experience in WIL.
  • Manage the student roster and event planning in conjunction with Academic Head: Hospitality Management.

Minimum requirements

  • A Bachelors’ Degree (NQF7) in Hospitality Management with three (3) years' job-related experience or
  • Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management (NQF7) or related field with five (5) years' job-related experience.
  • Experience in Restaurant, Banqueting, Conferencing and Events Management.
  • Financial Management experience: advanced knowledge of MICROs & OPERA financial systems).
 

Recommendations:

  • Candidate should ideally have a postgraduate qualification and more than 5 years’ experience in Food & Beverage Operations, Restaurant Management, Banqueting in the Hospitality sector.
  • Strong business and financial acumen.
  • Experience working with management across levels within an organisation, e.g. from junior to executive level.
  • Strong academic administration skills.
