Job Description:
 
The Department of Anthropology and Development Studies (DADS) consists of two subjects, Anthropology and Development Studies. We offer various degrees and courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in these subjects. In recent years ADS has been undergoing a process of internal review and renewal, and ongoing efforts have been made to bring the two sides of department together into a cohesive whole, through shared teaching and postgraduate supervisory programmes and in terms of research. Our undergraduate classes in both subjects are large, ranging from 600 students in some first-year classes, to 400 in some second-year courses, and 150 in third year. Honours classes are much smaller. We offer online and blended approaches. We run a weekly postgraduate seminar for all MA and PhD students, and we contribute to weekly seminars co-hosted with Sociology. We are also actively involved in initiating various other outward looking research programmes and activities, including the Gauteng Anthropology group. Our dynamic team of research and teaching staff in DADS have a range of research expertise and interests, stretching from medical anthropology to issues of social and environmental justice; and from the political economy of postcolonial states and development, to urban anthropology and from the anthropology of landscapes, waste and materiality; and from the politics of commemoration, memory and human remains to gender, youth and sexuality studies; water politics, and climate change; and governance and Human rights.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Teach courses in Anthropology and/or Development Studies at UG and Hons levels.
  • Supervise Hons, MA, and PhD students in Anthropology and/or Development Studies.
  • Plan, Conduct and Publish quality research in peer-reviewed accredited international journals, co-edited books, and monographs.
  • Secure research funding.
  • Offer strategic intellectual and academic leadership across Department of Anthropology and Development Studies. Participate in Global/International/Regional academic and disciplinary associations, conferences, journals etc.
  • Take part in the development of curricula and teaching programmes.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD in Anthropology or Development Studies, or related discipline,
  • Teaching and supervision experience at UG and PG levels,
  • Publications in accredited national and international journals
