Job description
- Analyse and interpret optical prescriptions.
- Determine the appropriate lenses and lens options based on the prescription requirements.
- Measure and assess facial features, including pupillary distance, frame width, bridge size, and temple length.
- Provide guidance to students related to dispensing matters.
- Stay current with the latest trends, technologies, and advancements in optical products, lenses, coatings, and frames.
- Must be able to independently select frames from suppliers that are appropriate for the UJ clinic patient base
- Assistance with cutting and fitting of spectacle jobs
- Repairs of spectacle frames.
Minimum requirements
- National Diploma in Optical Dispensing (NQF 6) or equivalent qualification.
- Must be currently registered with the HPCSA.
- Minimum of Three (3) to Five (5) years in optometric administration and dispensing opticians.
- Proven track record of work experience in an Optometric practice or a related health care facility and/or environment such as a clinic
- Good working knowledge of Optometric Management systems
- A valid driver’s licence.
- Good Interpersonal, Intercultural, Organisational, and planning skills.
- Proficiency in oral communication
- Ability to be assertive and paying attention to details
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information at all times, as well as maintaining reliability and integrity
- Ability to work independently as well as be a team player
- Excellent time management skills: the ability to prioritize workload and work under pressure (resilience) without supervision (adaptability)
- Proficiently in computer skills (Microsoft, internet, and emails)
- Experience working in an optometric practice or clinic facility
- Understanding confidentiality and the handling of information
- Knowledge of the rationale of appropriate patient care
- Knowledge of optical-related products such as lens materials, lens coatings, spectacle frame selections, contact lens products and other optical devices.
